About Early to Mid-November of this year it was announced that Sabrina Carpenter would not only lead star but also help produce a new live action musical adaptation of Lewis Carroll’s Alice In Wonderland. This sent the internet into a full blown frenzy. So what do we know about the project so far? Let’s talk about it.
Film Crew
Now, while the only person to be publicly announced as a cast member at this moment is Sabrina, we do know who is helping bring this film to life. The director for this film has been announced and it is no other than Lorene Scafaria. Lorene has directed films such as the 2019 movie Hustlers. It was also revealed that Marc Platt (yes the same man that helped bring the one billion dollar film franchise Wicked to life) is producing along side Leslie Morganstein and Elysa Koplovitz Dutton. The movie will be under Universal Studios the same studio that brought the Wicked movies to life.
Previous Alice In Wonderland Netflix x Sabrina Film
In 2020, Sabrina and Netflix were supposed to team up to create a film titled Wonderland to the streaming platform at some point. It was going to be a modern reimagining set at a music festival. The film was supposed to also be produced through Sabrina’s production company At Last Productions. The film was never released nor filmed. This could have been due to the global pandemic or even Sabrina’s busy schedule that was starting to happen but either way the film never got an official release.
Sabrina’s connection to Alice In Wonderland
Sabrina has always been a massive fan of the Alice In Wonderland franchise. She has always said in interviews that she is a big fan of the franchise. It is also known that Sabrina’s Sweet 16 had an Alice In Wonderland theme. In 2024 Sabrina and her then boyfriend Barry Keoghan went to the Met Gala together and people found connections to what they wore to the Alice In Wonderland film. Online people were saying Sabrina had an Alice vibe while Barry had a Mad Hatter vibe. When the project was announced it was said that Sabrina came to Universal in 2024, she came to them with an entire look book of her ideas and concept for the story.
Title and Release Date
While there is still no official title nor release date for the project, seeing that the Wicked movie took almost 3 years to be released, we may not see this film until at least 2028. Sabrina is also pretty busy at the moment. She is nominated for six Grammys for her 7th studio album Man’s Best Friend, she is headlining multiple festival shows next year, AND she is one of the headliners for Coachella 2026 alongside Karol G and Justin Bieber. Carpenter is also set to guest star and produce a television special for the Muppets next year. She also recently wrapped her Short n’ Sweet tour. So with all that said it’s very clear that she is booked and busy.
Nonetheless whenever this film makes its debut to the silver screen we will be excited to sit down and watch what Sabrina and Universal have in store!
