The Outdoor Classroom – An Idea to Give EIHS a Breath of Fresh Air

The Outdoor Classroom - An Idea to Give EIHS a Breath of Fresh Air

East Islip High School has recently been working on a project designed to bring a new learning environment to the school setting: An outdoor classroom.

This classroom is designed to engage students in a brand new way. Studies show that being outside can help students focus, think clearly, be more creative, and reduce stress. All of this can help students improve their work and be more successful.

This classroom is not planned to be made for specifically one subject. It can be used for any class including working on projects, group work, and many other activities, making it accessible for a variety of different subjects, so many students will be able to experience it.

The outdoor classroom is set to be located is in the courtyard in the North part of the school. While it doesn’t look complete quite yet, construction for the outdoor classroom is set to continue soon.

The For the Kids Foundation (FTK) is a strong supporter of this new classroom idea. The board unanimously approved a $40,000 donation to the cause. This donation money will be used to purchase the furniture and materials needed for this classroom.

“This contribution reflects FTK’s ongoing commitment to enhancing educational opportunities and enriching the learning environment for every student in the district,” Cheryl Pepe, President of FTK, explained.

Alexa Burkhard, a freshman at EIHS is excited at the idea and said, “I like the idea of being outside.”

The Broadcaster will keep you updated on the project ideas as well as construction, and we’re excited to see what comes next!
