For the first year ever, AP Human Geography (affectionately abbreviated to AP HUG!) is being offered to East Islip High School students.

Taught by Mrs. Lester, this class teaches students a lot about their relationship with their surroundings as humans, as well as how their world is projected to change now and in the future.
“I am excited to learn about different cultures and how things have changed over time,” AP HUG Senior Madison McNamee stated.
Jordyn Frey, another AP HUG student took the class because she is really interested in geography and wanted to learn more. By taking this class and learning about the geographical world, American students can debunk rumors that they “don’t know their geography!”
AP HUG is truly the ultimate class for relevant and present-day information that offers valuable knowledge for so many global issues.
“It’s everything…it’s economics, it’s history, it’s politics, it’s the environment,” said AP HUG teacher Mrs. Lester. “It contains material related to things like migration, immigration, and all of the stuff that is completely relevant to the world right now.”
This is not a typical history class, as it teaches so much about the now. Its modern principles and topics offer extremely useful information to many students.
“It will help students make connections to what they already know, but also help them make connections in other classes,” Lester added. “It’s this complex web of cultures and resources and we live in such an interconnected world that is only becoming more so… this class will help student navigate it as it moves into the future.”
With this, if you find that this class might resonate with your interests, or if you’re somebody who enjoys learning about current events, and having your courses connect to one another, you should definitely consider taking AP Human Geography in the coming years. This is an Advanced Placement history class that can offer college credits with success on the AP exam in May and it is actually more of an introductory AP class, so if you want to ease into taking more rigorous classes, AP HUG is perfect for you!
“I think it’s a cool class,” said Lester.
