The East Islip Varsity Field Hockey 2024 season just came to an end and the girls had a great season! They made it to the second round of playoffs but sadly lost to Miller Place in a final score of 1-0 scored on a stroke.
This team has consistently delivered outstanding performances season after season. This year, the team faced some fierce competition from rival teams such as the West Islip, Southampton, Sayville, Bayport-Bluepoint, and of course East Hampton who they finally beat in the first round of playoffs this year!
The season was filled with so many great memories from the practice of the summer to the playoff run, but there were some struggles along the way.
Senior goalkeeper Cassie Dodenhoff sometimes feels overwhelmed in goal. “I think the most stressful part for me about field hockey is my fear of letting my team down. I feel as though I need to be perfect for my team because when I make mistakes, goals go in and not only does the scoreboard change but the attitude on the field shifts,” Dodenhoff said.
Dodenhoff is an amazing leader and friend that always has a positive attitude – without her there would be no team! She was a part of so many great memories throughout her career on the team and especially this year.
“One of my favorite memories from field hockey is when I became close with all my teammates. Those moments when we bonded even if it was to run a lap for time,” senior midfielder Ashley Klub said. “At the end of the day we all supported each other, it really made a difference both on and off the field. I’m so grateful for those times and I am going to miss all of them so much! ”
Next year the team will look to follow up this strong season and make a playoff push with their new team led by a new group of seniors.
