James Gunn is a writer/producer known for his movies being comical and to get a good laugh at while still being super sad and having deeper meanings to them. Here are my top five James Gunn movies/tv shows that you should watch the next chance you get.

Scooby-Doo Franchise (2002, 2004)

The two Scooby-Doo movies are good at what they need to do. They are movies that adapt the characters really well from the cartoons, even bringing in characters like Scrappy-doo. The Scooby-Doo movies are good comedies that have humor for both adults and kids making it good to watch for both. The movies add a sense of mystery as well making you try to figure out who’s behind all of the mischief caused throughout the movie. I’d recommend these movies if you are in a goofy mood and want to be entertained.

The Suicide Squad (2021)

The Suicide Squad is a great film with plot twists action sequences and funny characters. The movie uses great details to transition scenes and has overall amazing cinematics. The characters are well written and the twists make you shocked. The movie does a great job of setting up future projects and recurring themes that will be in the future. Most people would call this the movie that set up James Gunn’s DC Universe.

Peacemaker (2022)

Peacemaker is such a great show if you want to get a good laugh with your friends because the comedy in it is hilarious. This show is great at making funny moments turn into sad moments and will throw plot twists in and it will leave you on the edge of your seat. The show’s premise follows Christopher Smith, aka Peacemaker, who was abused as a kid and has made a vow to achieve peace no matter the cost to get it. Chris gets hired by a team and goes through challenges each season like stopping an alien invasion or going through multiverse portals. This show is definitely a good watch and the intro is amazing each season.

Superman (2025)

Superman is a character that has had many adaptations into live action with many of them not being liked by audiences. James Gunn’s version, however, adapted him and all of the other characters in this movie very well.

“The new superman movie was good and portrayed the characters good,” East Islip Junior Olivia Irizarry said. “But was kind of nostalgia bait and was trying to appeal to older fans who grew up with him as a kid.”

Superman, played by David Corenswet, has been Superman for three years and has defeated a bunch of enemies. Lex Luthor Superman’s main villain does anything he can to defeat him so that he can take over a country he wants. Lex finds the parents message that had been sent with Superman and the meaningful message that was a symbol for hope turned out to be telling Superman to take over the earth. The media turns against superman and he is at his lowest. Superman with the help of the Justice Gang stops Lex from taking over the country and Superman defeats Lex delivering the most iconic speech of the movie. This movie is a symbol for hope and has the great message to spread kindness not hate. 10/10

Guardians Of The Galaxy Franchise (2014, 2017, 2023)

The Guardians Of The Galaxy trilogy is by far my favorite James Gunn project. These movies do such a good job at giving you funny, goofy characters who even after all their jokes have depth and make viewers feel emotional because of how James Gunn has written them. While these characters started off as enemies just trying to collect a bounty they grow into this family that makes them the best team in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). The music in these movies makes you want to listen to them forever because James Gunn never has had a bad song in these movies. These movies make you feel immersed and makes you wish you were with them soaring through space, and that’s why I love them. These movies show you that family isn’t just your blood, it’s the people you love.

James Gunn is an amazing movie writer/director and he knows how to turn a lovable bunch of characters sad and make you feel for them. James Gunn is great at putting music in the right spot and has never had a bad needle drop making scenes feel so cool and so well written. His soundtracks are always good, he knows when to include humor and is such an amazing writer/director.
