Recently Mrs. Gibbons, an art teacher, challenged her 10-12th grade Fashion class to modernize fashion from throughout the decades. Students were assigned a decade and had to research the type of clothing and style and edit them to fit the 21st century.
The fashion class taught by Mrs. Gibbons was randomly assigned a decade from the 1800s to now. They had around three weeks to complete the assignment and present it.
When asked why she chose the project Mrs. Gibbons response was: “I think it’s really important that people understand the history of the subject matter.”
Instead of spending months teaching about every decade the students were able to learn a little about a certain time period and share with the class later on.
They researched the styles and materials that the decade was centered around and even how the clothes were made and sold. Once they had a general idea on the fashion surrounding their decade they would receive two blank models and used alcohol markers and fine liners to draw one outfit staying true to the time period and the next drawing modernized.
Many students including senior Gabby Zimmitti responded well to the project. “I had the 80s as my decade,” Zimmitti said. “It was a good project. I liked researching the decades.”
Mrs. Gibbons had some of her favorite outfits created outside the classroom in the art hallway for all to see alongside work from the other art classes.
